IONOS is our top pick for cheap dedicated hosting providers, offering the lowest entry price in this lineup at $41/mo. Keep in mind that affordability is relative when it comes to dedicated servers, which are always going to be on the expensive side.

If you want strong value with semi-managed support included by default, InterServer is a solid alternative, with Buy It Now servers starting at $79/mo. If you need a fully managed dedicated server and budget is less of a concern, Bluehost offers a hands-off experience with professional server management included, starting at $141.19/mo.

This guide will provide all the information you need to decide which cheap dedicated server hosting plan is right for you.

How we test web hosting services

Our team has conducted hands-on testing on 20+ web hosting services. We sign up for each service and deploy a real test website before formal testing begins, giving us a baseline to measure performance against.

Then, we evaluate each provider across seven categories:

  • Performance (30%): We run page speed tests across three geographic locations, monitor uptime for at least 3 days, and conduct stress tests to measure how each host holds up under load.
  • Capacity (24%): We assess the maximum storage and monthly visits available across plan tiers, and verify how frequently automated backups are created.
  • Editor's score (11%): We evaluate the overall experience of using the platform, including dashboard quality, onboarding, accuracy of marketing claims, and reputation signals from Trustpilot, G2, Capterra, and Reddit. We also note any history of concerning practices, such as price hikes or security incidents.
  • Features (10%): We check which tools are bundled into standard plans, including free SSL, CDN, staging environments, email hosting, migration support, and a website builder.
  • Security (10%): We verify whether the host includes malware scanning and removal, DDoS protection, and a firewall on standard plans.
  • Value (10%): We compare introductory and renewal pricing and check whether a money-back guarantee is offered.
  • Customer support (5%): We contact support directly and assess the number of available channels on standard plans.

We retest all web hosting services at least once a year. To learn more about how we test, read our full web hosting testing methodology here.

What we liked

Most affordable entry price: IONOS offers dedicated server plans starting at $41/mo, the lowest entry price in this lineup. That undercuts InterServer's Buy It Now pricing of $79/mo and is well below Bluehost's $141.19/mo starting price. As with any budget-focused option, entry-level plans offer fewer resources than higher-tier configurations, so factor in your actual workload before choosing the cheapest plan.

Premium assistance is available: If you don't know how to manage your server, the IONOS team can do it for you. In our opinion, it's great for any business owner to have that option. IONOS's plans have a generally reliable reputation, and in our experience, the company lives up to it.

Great security features: All of the hosts on this list are security-conscious providers. IONOS goes the extra mile when scanning for malicious activity and offers a robust firewall. Overall, we were very impressed with IONOS's approach to security.

What we didn't like

Managed servers cost extra: IONOS does offer a managed server option, but it will substantially negate any savings you may have made from getting a deal. InterServer, on the other hand, at least offers a semi-managed approach without charging more.

Star rating summary

IONOS scored very highly across the most important categories, but it was dinged in the features department for requiring you to do some tasks yourself. Ultimately, you'll get more out of IONOS if you have some experience with server administration.

Nevertheless, the dedicated plans come with strong security features, and there are great managed server options. When comparing Bluehost vs. IONOS, IONOS can also be a much more affordable option for dedicated hosting.

IONOS received a perfect star rating of 5.0 as a genuinely capable web host that punches above its weight on performance and price. In our testing, it hit 100% uptime, scored a 99+ performance rating across all three test locations, and handled 250 concurrent users without a single HTTP failure.  You also get free SSL, daily backups, unlimited bandwidth, and in-depth analytics tools.

The main drawback is the dashboard experience: upsells are everywhere and security features are buried rather than surfaced prominently.

InterServer

What we liked

Great customer support: All dedicated servers at InterServer are semi-managed by default, with extra management services available. Our experience with the support team was fast and smooth, which is what you want when the hosting company handles much of the technical work for you.

Great value for the money: InterServer's Buy It Now servers start at $79/mo and pack in serious resources — including 64 GB of RAM on entry-level configurations. That significantly outperforms Bluehost's 32 GB entry plan, which costs nearly double. The company also maintains a marketplace page with temporary deals on additional servers, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

IPMI-compatible: The Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) is a technology that enables remote access to server features. For example, it can power up a server that's been turned off or install an operating system remotely without physical access. This is incredibly useful for any dedicated server.

What we didn't like

Fully managed servers cost more: InterServer's dedicated hosting plans are only partially managed by default. This means the support team can reinstall the OS for you or fix basic issues with common server and hosting technologies. Anything more advanced will cost more.

Test results

Our performance testing of InterServer's shared hosting plans didn't go well. There were a couple of service interruptions, and server response times varied widely. This was with InterServer's shared hosting, however, which isn't InterServer's specialty. When comparing shared hosting vs. dedicated hosting, InterServer's dedicated offering is much, much better.

Star rating summary

In our rating system, the most important categories are features, security, and performance. InterServer scored well in features and security, with similarly high scores across all other categories, except performance. But keep in mind that those performance scores relate to InterServer's shared hosting plans, in any case, not its dedicated server performance.

We've seen solid performance from the provider's dedicated hosting plans, which we rate as providing great value and offering first-class customer support.

InterServer earned a high star rating of 4.6 due to its competitive pricing, extensive hosting features, and comprehensive security measures.

Our biggest issue was with InterServer's shared hosting performance, with its slow page speed performance score and high server response time.

What we liked

Fully managed servers: If you don't have experience managing servers, you'll appreciate that Bluehost's dedicated hosting plans are fully managed by default, and the company's staff will handle everything technical for you.

Three dedicated IPs per server: Each dedicated server should include a dedicated IP address used only by your server. Bluehost goes the extra mile, though, and you can purchase up to three different IP addresses per server. While some people may not need this, it can be useful when building out your infrastructure, especially if you want some things public and others on the server for internal use.

Easy software installation and site migration: Bluehost broadly assumes that you'll want to host a substantial, complex website on your server. If that's your plan, you'll find it easy to install the CMS of your choice, and there's even a free tool for migrating WordPress websites from other hosts.

What we didn't like

Higher prices: The fully managed service is a double-edged sword, as you'll pay a pretty hefty price compared to unmanaged plans. The cheapest preconfigured dedicated server plan costs $141.19/mo, with a 36-month term that renews at $188.79/mo. Unfortunately, there are no special deals to be found here.

Test results

Bluehost didn't have any issues during our performance tests of its shared hosting plans. Page load times were fast, uptime was 100%, and average server response times were great. During the stress test, meanwhile, Bluehost's servers barely broke a sweat and continued to deliver excellent response times.

Star rating summary

Bluehost did very well in our review, scoring high across the features, performance, and security categories, making it one of the best services we've tested. If you want a fully managed dedicated server hosting solution, it's an excellent pick and offers a lot of value for its price.

Bluehost received a near-perfect star rating of 4.9 for its reliable performance, comprehensive security features, and a variety of customer support options.

Bluehost's lowest score is in the general features category. Bluehost was docked mainly for missing domain privacy on the Starter plan, the lack of bundled email hosting, and the lack of free migration assistance. Those are real gaps, but they don't change how much Bluehost gets right for new WordPress users.

How to choose the best cheap dedicated server plan

There are several important factors when choosing the right dedicated server for your needs. First, you'll want to determine exactly what resources you need to run operations on your server, and how many users you expect to access it. If you're uncertain, work with your dev team to reach a decision.

You can then compare each plan based on the following factors:

  • CPU: Check the core count and clock rate. You might want a server with 64 cores that run a little slower, or four that run very, very quickly. AMD server CPUs also tend to give a bit more value for the money right now.
  • RAM: Generally speaking, you'll want lots of RAM for handling tasks.
  • Storage: Do you need fast SSD storage to handle high traffic? Or slower, larger HDDs for storing lots of data that you won't have to access too much?
  • Security: While the security of a dedicated server is largely up to the person managing it, you'll want your host to offer DDoS protection (to avoid having your service taken down by botnets), external firewalls (to filter out malicious traffic before it reaches your server), and malware scanners (which can keep an eye on traffic and your server for any malicious files or activity).
  • Control panels: If you're not a server admin expert or don't employ one, it's helpful if your server comes with a control panel to make your life easier.
  • Managed vs. unmanaged: Some hosts offer managed servers, which means that they can actually handle all of the technical work for you, and set your configuration up to the point where you don't have to worry about the server itself. This typically costs much more than using unmanaged servers, where you are fully responsible for managing them.

Bottom line: The best cheap dedicated server hosting

Our top pick for cheap dedicated servers is IONOS, which offers the lowest entry price in this lineup at $41/mo, strong security features, and the option to add managed support. If you want dedicated server resources without overpaying, IONOS is the right starting point.

InterServer and Bluehost are both solid alternatives. InterServer specializes in dedicated servers and packs impressive resources into its entry-level configs — 64 GB of RAM starting at $79/mo — making it the strongest pick for server-savvy users who want flexible hardware and semi-managed support. Bluehost is the right choice if you want a fully managed, hands-off experience and aren't primarily budget-driven, with plans starting at $141.19/mo.

All in all, you could pick any of the three and have a good experience. IONOS is the best value for budget-focused users, InterServer is the strongest pick for teams who want maximum resources per dollar, and Bluehost is the most complete option if you need professional management included from day one.

FAQs

How much does affordable dedicated hosting cost?

Affordable dedicated hosting plans can cost anywhere from $50/mo for a good deal to hundreds per month for the most powerful servers and fully managed dedicated server hosting. Dedicated hosting can be fantastic, but we only recommend it if you really need dedicated server resources.

If you’re on a budget, check out our VPS vs. dedicated hosting guide to see if VPS plans might be a better fit for you. If scalability is key, you may want to consider cloud hosting.

What’s the best, cheapest dedicated server hosting?

The best, cheapest dedicated server offer we recommend is a $41/mo Value server deal on IONOS with a 4-core Xeon CPU, 16 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of HDD storage. That said, both IONOS and InterServer offer pretty good temporary deals, and InterServer has a server available at the time of writing for $79/mo with a similar processor, but 64 GB of RAM, and 22 TB HDD, and another option at the same price, with a 12-core CPU and two 2 TB SSDs. IONOS’s deal is a lot cheaper, but InterServer’s deals offer a lot more resources and overall power for the money, so what you pick will depend on your priorities.

Can you upgrade cheap dedicated servers?

Yes, you can generally upgrade cheap dedicated servers. Most services will offer an option to pay more per month to add more RAM or storage, if you need it. However, if you need a substantial upgrade to your CPU, you may need to rent a more powerful server and have all your files and apps moved over to it.
