Hostinger pros and cons

Hostinger is the best web host for most users, as its higher storage limits give you lots of space to add content before you’re forced to switch plans. Even first-time website creators can get a lot out of Hostinger, as it offers both a visual website builder and high-quality guided WordPress setup tools.

Hostinger offers highly intuitive tools for account, site, and server management. These include a visual website builder with both AI generation and premade templates, as well as guided WordPress installation and a WordPress site assistant with links and tutorials for performing key tasks.

Hostinger provides 25 GB of storage on its lowest-tier plan, more than double the storage offered by HostGator’s equivalent plan. You’ll also get more tools to protect your data, most notably automated backups, which happen weekly at the lowest-tier plan and daily on higher-tier plans.

Unfortunately, Hostinger’s customer service is less than spectacular, relying mostly on an AI live chat. Hostinger also fails to ensure PCI compliance on its servers — a security standard essential for legally processing credit card payments in most countries.

Pros
  • Intuitive tools for account and server management
  • Offers both a website builder and guided WordPress setup tools
  • Automated backups (weekly or daily) on all plans
Cons
  • Lackluster customer service provided primarily by AI-powered live chat
  • Lacks PCI compliance

HostGator pros and cons

HostGator is better for users who expect to need a lot of support, as it makes it easier to access human support. Users who prefer accessing customer service via phone will also prefer HostGator, as Hostinger doesn’t offer phone support at all.
HostGator offers decent storage and enough resources for large numbers of visitors, starting at 40K monthly visitors — almost double the number supported by Hostinger’s lowest-tier plan. We also found HostGator’s live chat representatives to be fast and helpful.

HostGator has some beginner-friendly WordPress tools, including a guided installation process and a proprietary WordPress center for simplifying basic setup tasks. However, these tools are available only on HostGator’s more expensive WordPress plans.

HostGator has some notable downsides on the security front, namely the lack of automated backups. HostGator’s shared hosting servers also lack PCI compliance, which is problematic if you want to accept credit card payments on your site.

Pros
  • High allowances for monthly visitors
  • Intuitive account and domain management tools
  • More accessible human customer support
Cons
  • WordPress tools are limited to more expensive plans
  • Automated backups not included
  • Lacks PCI compliance

Which web hosting service has the best core features?

Hostinger and HostGator both offer unlimited bandwidth, migration assistance, and control panel access (though Hostinger uses a proprietary server management tool, hPanel). Hostinger has an advantage in the storage department, while HostGator allows for more monthly visitors.

Hostinger does have one major advantage: its inclusion of both high-quality WordPress tools and access to the website builder on almost all of its plans. This gives you full control over how you build your website and simplifies many aspects of the site creation process.

Winner: Hostinger wins the features category of the Hostinger vs. HostGator debate, largely thanks to the variety of website building tools available on Hostinger’s lowest-tier plans.

Which web host has the best performance and reliability?

HostGator had better server performance during our week of testing, with 100% uptime and loading times of roughly half of a second.

Site speeds for both hosts were under 1 second, which is well below our maximum recommended site speed of 3 seconds. Our HostGator site did take roughly half as long to load as our Hostinger site, giving it a slight advantage.

As for uptime, HostGator guarantees only 99% uptime, meaning your site could go down for up to 1 hour and 40 minutes per week. Hostinger, meanwhile, offers the industry-standard 99.9% guarantee, which only allows for 10 minutes of downtime per week. While both hosts had 100% uptime during our tests, this difference in guarantees means Hostinger might be more reliable long term.

Winner: HostGator. Its servers were impressively fast and highly reliable during our testing, earning it the win.

Which web host is the better value?

HostGator offers better hosting value for users experienced in web hosting, while Hostinger offers better value for first-time website owners.

Hostinger plans

Hostinger plans includes three shared hosting plans that provide access to the proprietary hPanel, website builder, and WordPress setup tools. These plans are:

  • Premium: Premium is $2.99/mo and offers 25 GB of storage and enough resources for 25K monthly visitors, with a maximum of 3 websites.
  • Business: Business is $3.99/mo and provides 50 GB of storage and enough resources for 100K monthly visitors, with up to 50 websites.
  • Cloud Startup: Cloud Startup is $7.99/mo and features 100 GB of storage and enough resources for 200K monthly visitors, for up to 100 websites.

All of Hostinger’s plans are backed by its 30-day money-back guarantee.

HostGator plans

HostGator plans include four shared hosting plans, all protected by its 30-day money-back guarantee:

  • Hatchling: Hatchling is $3.75/mo and provides 10 GB of storage, 40K monthly visitors, and 10 websites.
  • Baby: Baby is $4.50/mo and includes 20 GB of storage, 50K monthly visitors, and 20 websites.
  • Business: Business is $6.25/mo and features 50 GB of storage, 200K monthly visits, and 50 websites.
  • Pro: Pro is $13.95/mo includes 100 GB of storage, 400K monthly visitors, and 100 websites.

Winner: Hostinger gains a slight edge through its WordPress and website builder tools, though HostGator offers similar value otherwise.

Both Hostinger and HostGator provide firewall protection, malware scanning, and DDoS protection to keep your site safe. The big difference between them is that Hostinger offers automated backups on all plans, starting with weekly backups on the lowest-tier plans. These increase to daily backups on higher-tier plans. HostGator requires you to purchase a separate add-on to access automated backups.

Unfortunately, neither host offers PCI-compliant servers. You’ll have to either arrange to meet these standards on your own or choose a different option from our list of the best web hosts.

Winner: Hostinger wins the security portion of the Hostinger vs HostGator debate thanks to its automated backup policies.

Hostinger and HostGator both offer self-serve knowledge bases with numerous step-by-step tutorials for completing various web hosting tasks. They both offer live chat, but Hostinger’s is AI-based and reluctant to connect you with a human representative, whereas HostGator consistently connected us with a human within a few minutes. HostGator also provides phone support on its higher-tier plans, something not available through Hostinger at all.

However, our positive experience with HostGator support isn’t reflected across the board. Its rankings on review sites are consistently lower than Hostinger’s, with many people citing issues with customer service.

Winner: HostGator, as it offered better support during our tests, but customer review sites suggest that your experience may be different.

How we test web hosting services

We use our proprietary grading rubric to evaluate web hosts based on performance, ease of use, features, support, and overall value. Our hands-on approach ensures our ratings reflect how each service actually performs in the real world, so you can choose a host with confidence.

Our process starts with signing up for each service and setting up a real website, just like you would. We run page speed, uptime, and stress tests to measure reliability and performance under load. We also explore the dashboard, test security tools, and contact support to see how responsive and helpful it is.
