Who it’s best for

RoboForm is ideal for individuals seeking a comprehensive suite of features to complement their password manager. In addition to the regular features included in most password managers, like form fillers and password generators, RoboForm offers a master password restore in case you forget the master password for your RoboForm account.

Norton Password Manager reset password page with bubbles from Roboform's password generator

Additionally, RoboForm offers a password change history. This way, you can view metrics on your password history. This can help determine if an account has been hacked, allowing you to move quickly to change the credentials and secure your account.

Roboform's Security Center feature open on security overview tab

We also liked RoboForm’s customer service options. Many older adults aren’t comfortable with email or self-help guides. RoboForm offers live chat, phone support, and email support via a support ticket. The variety of support options should fit anyone’s comfort level.

What we liked

We appreciate the extra features and variety of customer support options available from RoboForm. During our testing, we found the live chat experience was positive.

RoboForm offered a simple, intuitive setup that imported our passwords from other sources where they were stored. This made it extremely easy to begin using RoboForm right away. It also helped us remove our passwords from Chrome, as Google’s password manager isn’t considered secure.

Another bonus was the fact that RoboForm has never suffered a data breach. Not all of these services can claim that honor. Hacked password managers can release all of your most personal details, so put that on your list of things to check for when shopping for password management software.

What we didn’t like

Although the customer service options are robust, we weren’t the biggest fans of the ticketing method RoboForm uses for support. It took us almost 11 hours to receive an initial response. To respond, we had to log back into our RoboForm portal rather than email back directly. This is less than ideal.

If you’re trying to access an account or need to access your personal information quickly, waiting this long could become a problem.

It was all very cumbersome and somewhat outdated. We also noted that the free plan lacks key features such as access on all devices, which is why we recommend one of the paid plans for RoboForm.

Star rating summary

RoboForm has a high star rating of 4.9 due to its comprehensive features, economical pricing, and extensive compatibility across operating systems and browser extensions.

RoboForm received a lower score in the value category because the free plan only covers one device and a lower score in the trust category due to its ratings on Trustpilot.

  • #1 ranked password manager with a strong history of security
  • Trusted Nord name backed by best-in-class encryption practices
  • Grab NordPass on its own or opt for a fully-featured security bundle

Who it’s best for

NordPass is ideal for anyone seeking a password manager that integrates with other security products, such as cloud storage and a VPN.

If you’re an older adult seeking enhanced security or a family member looking to help increase it, this is a great password manager. All of Nord’s products are kept in a single dashboard, so there’s no need to worry about switching between the bundled products. It’s all easily accessible and at your fingertips.

What is a VPN?

VPNs help secure your internet connection by encrypting your data and masking your IP address. VPNs are especially helpful if you use an unsecured Wi-Fi connection — or if you simply want to maintain your privacy online and block advertisers from tracking you.

Learn more in our NordVPN review.

What we liked

We appreciate that Nord offers a unified dashboard for all products, which can be expanded into individual service dashboards. It’s clean and organized, and it works well for anyone who has technology anxiety.

Looking at passwords in NordPass

Because of the amount of information it can store, NordPass can serve as a secure vault for personal items, including your Social Security Administration credentials, bank account information, digital copies of important documents, and any other digital files you’d like to protect.

NordPass offers many of the same features as other password managers, including a password generator that helps ensure none of your passwords are weak or reused.

NordPass on-page password generator

The compatibility with various operating systems and browsers enables seniors to sync across all devices. For example, this eliminates frustration when you’re trying to sign into your mobile banking on your phone, especially if you also have the account on your laptop.

Since many people own a variety of devices — including Apple, Samsung, Windows, and Android — NordPass’s compatibility bridges the gap, eliminating login frustration.

What we didn’t like

The free version is limited to a single device, meaning that to enjoy all the syncing benefits, you’ll need to pay for a subscription. Many older Americans have fixed incomes, which could make it difficult to use a service like NordPass.

Best Password Manager For Sharing Passwords
Password Manager
1Password
  • Seamless password sharing, even with people who don't have 1Password accounts
  • Secure encryption standards with no history of being hacked or leaking data
  • Unique features, like Travel Mode and Watchtower to keep your data safe

Who it’s best for

1Password is ideal for seniors, couples, and families who want an intuitive password manager with strong security and flexible sharing tools. With a Family plan for up to 5 people, 1Password is especially useful if you want to securely share passwords with relatives or caregivers, organize logins into separate vaults, and keep a digital legacy plan in place for emergencies.

During our testing, 1Password stood out for how easy it was to set up and use. The apps walk you through the basics, and the interface makes it simple to store passwords, payment details, important documents, and other sensitive information in one place.

Setup checklist for 1Password mobile app

We also like that 1Password works across major devices and browsers, which helps reduce frustration for older adults who switch between a phone, tablet, and computer.

What we liked

1Password is one of the most intuitive password managers we tested. It provides setup checklists, guided prompts, and an easy-to-navigate dashboard, so the learning curve is minimal. We also appreciate the user-friendly Family plan that allows individual profiles for up to 5 users.

Based on our testing, we also found that the service offers excellent password-sharing options. You can securely share credentials even with people who don’t have 1Password accounts, and you can control who gets access and how long the shared link stays active.

1Password pop-up for sharing a link to an item

Another standout is Watchtower, which monitors password health and flags compromised logins, passkey opportunities, and accounts that support two-factor authentication. The Emergency Kit is a valuable feature that can help trusted loved ones access your information in an emergency, plus Travel Mode for extra privacy when traveling.

1Password Watchtower feature report

What we didn’t like

1Password doesn’t offer a free plan or money-back guarantee, so you’ll need to use the 14-day free trial to decide whether it’s the right fit before subscribing.

We were also underwhelmed by the customer support options. Although 1Password advertises 24/7 support, it’s primarily limited to email, online guides, community forums, and a chatbot rather than live chat or phone support. That said, we personally found the email support to be very responsible and helpful.

  • Automatically update your weak passwords with just a click

Who it’s best for

Aura Password Manager is ideal for seniors who want a user-friendly, low-stress security suite. All base plans include antivirus software and a VPN that are super easy to use. The password vault is also a "set-and-forget" feature that requires only a simple setup.

What we liked

Aura Password Manager automatically updates weak or compromised passwords. Although this convenient feature doesn't work seamlessly on every website (due to login restrictions), it can save you a lot of time if you've been guilty of reusing the same password across multiple online accounts. There's also a clean desktop widget that provides a clear overview of compromised accounts and offers easy access to the main dashboard for making important changes.

We also appreciate that Aura automatically integrates real-time antivirus protection and a user-friendly VPN, which can be toggled on/off. That means you don't need experience with advanced VPN features. Similarly, Aura Antivirus features a modern interface and clearly laid-out controls, making it easy to select scan options.

Additionally, seniors interested in Aura Identity Theft Protection can opt for full coverage with the highest-tier plan. The Ultimate plan also includes Aura Ad Blocker, Safe Browsing tools, and a Sensitive Files Vault, in addition to identity theft insurance, credit monitoring, and financial fraud services.

Learn more about our experience testing Aura Credit Monitoring services and how Aura helps secure online financial accounts.

What we didn’t like

Although Aura Password Manager includes the core features of a premium password vault, it lacks emergency access and digital legacy features, which competitors like NordPass offer. Now more than ever, it's important to have safeguards in place so that family members can access our online accounts in an emergency. We hope Aura continues to develop its app to include digital legacy. See how Aura compares to NordPass.

Additionally, password sharing is limited to family members on your plan. Other password management solutions, like 1Password, allow sharing passwords externally, while Aura doesn't. You'd have to share passwords with anyone not included manually. See how Aura compares to 1Password.

Who it’s best for

Dashlane is a great choice for anyone seeking a password manager with robust features and seamless sharing options. If you want to securely send login credentials to family members, friends, or colleagues, Dashlane makes the process simple and safe.

What we liked

We liked how intuitive Dashlane’s password-sharing feature is. You can quickly share individual logins or entire collections of passwords with trusted contacts while maintaining control over access.

The platform also goes beyond sharing. Dashlane includes password health scores and alerts if it detects compromised or reused passwords, helping you keep your digital security strong. And if you upgrade, you’ll gain extras like Hotspot Shield VPN and unlimited password storage, making it easy to manage every aspect of your online security in one place.

Dashlane includes a password strength and health report that flags weak and compromised passwords.

Many competitors offer digital legacy features only with higher-tier plans, but Dashlane lets you safely pass on credentials to a trusted contact if needed. Overall, it’s straightforward, secure, and user-friendly.

What we didn’t like

We found the privacy policy a little confusing. Dashlane shares passwords with “affiliates,” but we are unsure whether these are internal or third-party affiliates. There’s no clarification for this in the privacy policy.

How we test and rate password managers

We put every password manager through vigorous hands-on testing by downloading the software to our own devices. We test how the product works on both mobile and desktop, evaluating how well we're able to save, share, and use passwords across a variety of situations.

By taking a fine-tooth comb through all available features and settings, we carefully compare each product using our proprietary grading rubric. The star ratings take into account price, features, extras like cloud storage and data breach alerts, plus looks at security and privacy features like encryption levels and past data breaches.
