If you think SiteGround is just too expensive, we recommend Hostinger as the best SiteGround alternative. Hostinger offers a lot of the same features and ease of use at much more affordable rates. (e.g. $10.99/mo after renewal for select Hostinger plans as opposed to $17.99/mo after renewal for select SiteGround plans).

But if you need something even cheaper, IONOS packs a lot of overall value into its plans. And, if money’s not the problem and you want the very best in WordPress hosting, there’s Kinsta.

We compare pricing, features, performance, and more to help you pick the best web hosting service for your business.

What we liked

Solid AI tools: Hostinger offers a comprehensive AI-powered website builder with advanced features to streamline your business. In addition to 1-click building, Hostinger gives tools for website management. The Kodee assistant can literally help you manage your online store by adding product entries, reporting on inventory, and more.

Great performance: Hostinger’s servers handled everything we threw at them, and then some, as you’ll see below. Fast sites keep your potential customers around longer, so this is always worth considering. Hostinger also exceeded its 99.9% uptime guarantee and includes built-in optimizations to make sure your site continues to run smoothly.

Beginner-friendly: Hostinger puts a major emphasis on ease of use and offers multiple 1-click ways to build your site or set up a CMS with minimal fuss. The web hosting admin UI makes it easy to find everything you’ll need.

What we didn’t like

Not PCI compliant: A lack of PCI compliance means Hostinger’s servers, while secure, aren’t considered secure enough to handle your customers’ financial information. You can still build an ecommerce business on Hostinger, you’ll just need to use a third-party payment platform to handle customer info.

Test results

Hostinger breezed past our performance tests: 100% uptime, combined with decent site loading times, and good average server response times mean your site will be snappy. Even better, Hostinger’s servers handled the stress test particularly well. The stress test simulates a spike in traffic of 250 visitors, and Hostinger demonstrated the ability to manage the uptick without a hiccup.

Star rating summary

Hostinger scored 5/5 in all of our most important categories: features, performance, and security. It did well across the board, mind you, but those are the categories that carry the most weight in our rating system.

Hostinger earned a near-perfect star rating of 4.9 because it is user-friendly and comprehensive, provides reliable performance, and is affordable for small- to medium-sized businesses.

What we liked

Fairly easy to use: While IONOS offers options for hosting experts, and it wouldn’t hurt to know a bit about managing your host, IONOS has a beginner-friendly interface. IONOS won’t handle everything for you, but it’s not hard to get started with a basic website or install a CMS.

Excellent security features: IONOS offers a comprehensive suite of security tools, including DDoS protection, firewalls, malware and vulnerability scanning, and more. All of the hosts on this list are secure, but IONOS just impressed us in this category.

Wide variety of plans for growing your website: IONOS makes it easy to scale your site with a range of hosting options, including shared, VPS, and cloud hosting. There is even the option to use a dedicated server if you want. However much your site grows, IONOS can handle it.

What we didn’t like

Lack of some performance tools like a free CDN: While the servers themselves perform well (as you’ll see below), IONOS’s plans don’t include commonly used extra performance features like a free CDN. You’ll need to integrate that separately. Also, there’s no option for using LiteSpeed servers for your PHP-based sites (e.g., WordPress).

Test results

IONOS performed well during our in-house testing, delivering fantastic site performance, short loading times, and reasonable server response times. 100% uptime is nothing to sneeze at, and the servers handled the stress test with no issues.

Star rating summary

On the whole, IONOS rates very highly in our metrics, with perfect scores in the security and performance categories, though it lags a bit in the features department. On the whole, IONOS is better for people with a bit of hosting experience.

IONOS received a high star rating of 4.7 due to its highly intuitive dashboard, comprehensive features for affordable prices, and impressive performance.

Although we had a positive testing experience with IONOS, it received in a lower score in the experience category due to the upsells on various pages of the dashboard. IONOS also lacks built-in content delivery network.

Kinsta
  • High performance, reliable servers
  • Every WordPress-related feature you need
  • Very high prices

What we liked

(Probably) The best WordPress hosting: Kinsta used to do just one thing: WordPress. Now it has added a couple of extra hosting options, but WordPress is still far and away the main focus. As a result, Kinsta’s WordPress sites are rock-solid, fast, and have plenty of extra features by default to make building your own site easier. This form of specialization has served Kinsta and its customers well.

Almost all features across all plans: I do like it when web hosts separate their pricing plans by available resources and let customers on lower tiers access most of the features. That way, you can be sure you really want to upgrade in the future.

Great performance: As you’ll see in the test results below, Kinsta offers fast and very stable servers, along with plenty of optimizations to make WordPress itself run faster. This is important because sometimes WordPress needs all the help it can get.

What we didn’t like

Very high prices: If you thought SiteGround was expensive, Kinsta may be an unpleasant surprise. Kinsta also offers a premium service for premium prices, but it’s even more expensive. The cheapest plan starts around $30 USD per month, and you have to lock down a couple of years in advance to get that rate.

Test results

Kinsta performed very well in our tests, with solid performance and site loading time scores across the board. But the really impressive part was the overall stability of the servers, which maintained 100% uptime and a low average response time for the entire testing period. That includes the stress test, by the way, in which the servers seemed to barely register the extra traffic.

Star rating summary

Kinsta scored fantastically across user experience, performance, and security. Being a mostly WordPress-oriented service, it naturally scored lower in terms of the overall feature set, as it simply doesn’t include a lot of “normal” hosting features that you’d expect to see on other platforms, but the WordPress-specific features are second to none.

Kinsta earned a solid star rating of 4.4 because it showed great performance, offers easy-to-use, WordPress-focused web hosting, and includes almost all features across all plans.

Kinsta only received a score lower than 4.0 in the value and capacity category because its expensive compared to other web hosting services.

When should you consider SiteGround alternatives?

SiteGround offers an experience that, when it comes down to it, many people seem to like and are willing to pay for. It’s very easy to use, and it’s very easy to get a lot of the more complicated aspects of hosting handled for you by the support team — if they haven’t been handled automatically. And, while our own testing did run into a couple of hiccups, SiteGround has a fantastic reputation for reliability.

But of course, no service will be perfect for everyone, and the big reason to look for other options will be the price. SiteGround isn’t the most expensive host, but it’s far from the most affordable. You might also look into alternatives if you want to take a more hands-on approach to configuring everything about your hosting, or if you want something more specialized.

Bottom line: The best SiteGround alternatives

Our top pick is Hostinger because it really offers the best convenience-to-price ratio for most use cases. But other options abound: IONOS is cheap and, if you have some experience with hosting, not hard to use. Kinsta, meanwhile, takes the SiteGround approach to the extreme, offering a truly fantastic WordPress-oriented service at even higher prices.

It all comes down to what you specifically need for your site in terms of affordability, convenience, and specialization.

How we test web hosting services

We use our proprietary grading rubric to evaluate web hosts based on performance, ease of use, features, support, and overall value. Our hands-on approach ensures our ratings reflect how each service actually performs in the real world, so you can choose a host with confidence.

Our process starts with signing up for each service and setting up a real website, just like you would. We run page speed, uptime, and stress tests to measure reliability and performance under load. We also explore the dashboard, test security tools, and contact support to see how responsive and helpful it is.

FAQs

Which web host is better than SiteGround?

Hostinger is better than SiteGround if you’re looking to get most of the same features at a lower price. IONOS is better if you want something even cheaper and have a bit of experience with hosting. Meanwhile, Kinsta is a great option if you want a service that’s entirely WordPress-oriented and don’t mind paying even more.

Why is SiteGround so expensive?

SiteGround is expensive because it has found customers willing to pay premium prices. But in terms of hosting, SiteGround takes a very do-it-for-you approach that’s worth it for many website owners.

Which hosting is best for a small website?

The best hosting for a small website is the one that works for you. But, generally speaking, we recommend Hostinger as a great starting point for most people. It has the best balance of price to convenience for the small website owner.
