Generally speaking, Hostinger will probably be your first choice. It's admittedly a little hard to decide which service offers the best small business web hosting, as so many of them are quite similar on the surface. But, according to our own testing, the top picks are Hostinger, Bluehost, IONOS, and Wix.

Hostinger offers a great all-around package of features for the price, while Bluehost is more affordable after renewal. IONOS is a great option for businesses looking to scale up significantly. And if you want website building, hosting, and security all under one roof, Wix is the all-in-one pick. But really, you'd probably be fine choosing any of the four, and here's why.

How we tested the best web hosting services for small businesses

When looking for the best web hosting platform for small business sites, we prioritized ease of use, overall stability, good server performance, security, affordability, and customer service. We tested each one by getting the cheapest plan, creating a website, and keeping records of our experiences.

We used Dotcom-Tools, Uptime Robot, and Loader.io for the performance, uptime, and load tests.

We made our judgments based on the following criteria:

  • Our experience: We noted how easy or hard it is to manage your hosting and set up a website.
  • Pricing: We compared the features offered in each plan to the price, accounting for price hikes after the first renewal.
  • Performance: We tested each site with the aforementioned tools to gauge each host's server speed and stability.
  • Features: We considered the number of features each host offered and the quality of their implementation.
  • Security: We examined each host's security practices and tools.
  • Support and reputation: We tested the support teams on simple issues to see how they responded.

What we liked

Beginner-friendly interface: Starting your first website shouldn't have to be complicated, and Hostinger follows that philosophy. Its admin UI is pretty good at giving you an intuitive, beginner-friendly experience for managing your hosting package.

Solid performance: Our testing revealed that Hostinger's shared hosting offers pretty good performance, especially for the price (see below for more details). A site that loads faster converts more, after all.

Good web builder tools: In keeping with the whole "ease of use" thing, Hostinger has made a point of including a simple yet powerful website builder to help you get up and running. Its WordPress integration is pretty good, too.

Hostinger add a section picker.

What we didn't like

Not PCI-compliant: While Hostinger is aimed at small businesses, its servers aren't certified to store customer payment information. You'll want to use a third-party payment platform like Stripe or PayPal for that, which can be inconvenient.

Test results

Across our tests, Hostinger performed admirably, with low, stable server response times. The performance scores were respectable, with fairly average loading times across the site. Google recommends FCP and LCP rates below 1.8 s and 2.5 s, respectively.

But site performance can be optimized to improve load times, especially with a reliable CDN. Server stability matters, and Hostinger has it in spades.

Star rating summary

The Performance, Features, and Security categories carry the most weight in our rating system, because you obviously want a site that's fast and secure. And, of course, you want the features to help you build that site in the first place. And in those particular categories, Hostinger got top marks across the board.

Hostinger earned a perfect star rating of 5.0 because of its user-friendly interface, affordable pricing, and complete package of features for new business users.

Hostinger received its lowest score in the value and capacity category because it has a low monthly visitor cap, so it's best for small- to medium-sized businesses.

What we liked

Great security features: Getting your site hacked isn't just an inconvenience; it can also be a legal liability. Bluehost goes the extra mile when integrating security features, including Imunify360, to harden your WordPress sites.

Affordable plans: Bluehost's plans are a little bit cheaper than Hostinger's when you account for the price hike after the first renewal on both platforms. For example, Bluehost's Personal plan renews at $8.99/mo, while Hostinger's Premium plan renews at $12.95/mo. (Yes, that's the cheapest plan.)

Seamless WordPress integration: Bluehost makes a particular point of streamlining its WordPress hosting experience with managed WordPress hosting plans, the security suite mentioned above, and a host of other features.

What we didn't like

Domain privacy isn't bundled into the lowest-tier plan: Bluehost offers a ton of security features across all plans, so we were disappointed that domain privacy isn't included in the starter plan. Domain privacy lets the website owner keep personal details private, which is important for security reasons.

Test results

Bluehost outperformed top competitors in our in-house testing, achieving 100% uptime, fast page load times, and low average response times.

Star rating summary

Bluehost received a near-perfect star rating of 4.9 for its reliable performance, comprehensive security features, and a variety of customer support options.

Bluehost's lowest score is in the general features category. Bluehost was docked mainly for missing domain privacy on the Starter plan, the lack of bundled email hosting, and the lack of free migration assistance. Those are real gaps, but they don't change how much Bluehost gets right for new WordPress users.

What we liked

Options for scaling to enterprise: IONOS offers quite a range of web hosting types that will let you grow from a small brochure site, to a mid-sized ecommerce site, to a full enterprise platform. That flexibility makes it a great choice for anyone who intends to scale up to the big leagues.

User-friendly: IONOS strikes a surprisingly good balance between the aforementioned enterprise options and ease of use for beginners. It gives you full control of your hosting experience without being too confusing.

Good web builder: IONOS makes it easy to launch your first website with a feature-rich, generally good site builder. Just tell it what kind of site you want, pick a design, and go from there.

What we didn't like

Lack of built-in performance tools: Shared hosting lacks features like a built-in CDN. You can get that separately, but it would be nice if it were included in the plan. The servers themselves are fast enough, though.

Test results

The maximum server response time we measured was a little high, but the servers were mostly stable. The performance scores were impressive, and the servers also performed very well under load during testing. The 100% uptime certainly didn't hurt the performance score either.

Star rating summary

The lack of features like a free CDN means that IONOS takes a small ding in the Features category. But it still gets top marks in the Performance and Security categories, along with quite high scores across the rest of our tests. All in all, IONOS offers a pretty decent package for the price.

IONOS received a perfect star rating of 5.0 as a genuinely capable web host that punches above its weight on performance and price. In our testing, it hit 100% uptime, scored a 99+ performance rating across all three test locations, and handled 250 concurrent users without a single HTTP failure.  You also get free SSL, daily backups, unlimited bandwidth, and in-depth analytics tools.

The main drawback is the dashboard experience: upsells are everywhere and security features are buried rather than surfaced prominently.

  • Meets 100% uptime guarantee with exceptional server response times and page load speeds
  • Best-in-class web builder that's customizable for all skill levels

What we liked

Everything in one platform: Most web hosts require you to source and manage a website builder separately, but Wix bundles both under one roof, offering the best all-in-one website hosting for small businesses. From building your site with AI-assisted tools to handling hosting, security, and ecommerce, Wix gives small business owners a complete solution without the need to stitch together multiple services. We were able to get a fully functional site live in under five minutes during testing, which is a genuine advantage for business owners who need to move fast.

PCI-compliant for ecommerce: If your small business sells products or services online, Wix's PCI-compliant servers mean you can accept payments directly through your site without relying on a third-party checkout tool. That's a meaningful edge over some competitors, which require you to route transactions through platforms like Stripe or PayPal.

Rock-solid reliability: Wix achieved 100% uptime and an average server response time of just 48 ms in our testing, among the fastest results we've recorded. Its servers also passed our stress test with no failures under load, making it a dependable foundation for a business site.

What we didn't like

Higher starting price: At $17.00/mo for the entry-level paid plan, Wix costs more upfront than traditional hosting options. That said, the price includes a full-featured website builder, which you'd otherwise need to purchase separately, so it's worth comparing total costs rather than plan prices alone.

Lower performance scores than dedicated hosts: Wix's JavaScript-heavy architecture means its page speed performance scores (80.3 average) trail behind dedicated web hosts like Bluehost and Hostinger. You're unlikely to notice a difference in day-to-day browsing, but it's worth keeping in mind if SEO performance scores are a priority.

Test results

Wix delivered exceptional server reliability and response times across our tests. Its average server response time of 48 ms is one of the lowest we've recorded for any hosting provider we've tested. The trade-off is a lower overall page speed performance score, which results from how Wix sites are preloaded via JavaScript, but its uptime and server stability are hard to beat.

Wix earned a near-perfect star rating of 5.0 because it provided an easy-to-use platform with intuitive design elements, customizable pricing along with a free plan, and several support options.

Wix only received a lower score in the features category because lower-tier plans are locked out of unlimited storage space and larger numbers of contributors.

What to look for

Choosing small business website hosting isn't the same as choosing one for a personal blog. The stakes are higher — your site needs to stay up, load fast, and not eat into your budget before you've had a chance to grow.

To understand what actually matters to small business owners, we surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults who have purchased or managed a business hosting plan. Price came out on top by a wide margin (72%), but ease of setup, speed, and uptime weren't far behind.

Features small business owners look for in a web hosting service

When shopping for a small business host, keep an eye out for:

  • Price and renewal costs. Introductory rates can be misleading — check what you'll pay at renewal before committing.
  • Ease of setup. Look for one-click installs, a beginner-friendly control panel, and solid onboarding support.
  • Speed and performance. Slow load times hurt both user experience and SEO. Look for SSD (Solid State Drive) or NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) storage, and a CDN (Content Delivery Network), for reliably fast page load times and enhanced performance.
  • Uptime reliability. A 99.9% uptime guarantee is the baseline; anything lower is a red flag for a business site.
  • Customer support. 24/7 live chat or phone support matters when something breaks at the wrong moment.
  • Scalability. You may start small, but choose a host that lets you upgrade without migrating to a new provider.

We used those priorities to guide our picks.

Bottom line: The best small business web hosting

Don't get me wrong, all four are pretty good. And you might decide that Bluehost's more affordable plans are right for your WordPress-based business site, you might want the room to grow that IONOS provides, or you might prefer the simplicity of Wix's all-in-one platform if you want building and hosting bundled together.

FAQs

Which hosting type is best for a small website?

Typically, shared hosting is fine, especially for brochure sites that just have a bit of information about your business and a contact or newsletter form. It can also work for small online shops. But once you get serious, VPS or cloud hosting might be better.

How much does it cost to host a website for a small business?

It can cost less than $2 a month to host a website with a host like Hostinger, but keep in mind that the price usually increases after your first renewal. Then it usually costs between $10 and $15 per month.

Is .com or .biz better?

Typically, .com is my recommended top-level domain for, well, everything, because .com is the one that people are most familiar with. But .biz is perfectly acceptable, and usually cheaper. You may also want to use a regional TLD specific to your country, like .us, .mx, or .ca.

Is Google web hosting free?

Google Sites, where you build websites with the site builder, is free up to a point (it’s tied to Google Workspace/Drive). With Google Cloud hosting, you can start with some free credits the first time around, but you’ll have to pay when you run out. And cloud hosting credits can go faster than you think. We think better free web hosting alternatives include Wix or WordPress.com, depending on whether you prefer a WordPress site.

Is Wix a good web host for small businesses?

Yes, Wix is a solid choice for small business owners who want an all-in-one platform. Unlike traditional web hosts, Wix bundles website building, hosting, and security into a single subscription. Its beginner-friendly AI builder can get a professional-looking site live in minutes, and its PCI-compliant servers support ecommerce out of the box, which is something not all hosts offer. The main trade-off is price: paid plans start at $17.00/mo, which is higher than traditional hosting. But Wix plans include everything a site needs to stay fast and secure, so the total cost is often comparable once you factor in what you'd spend elsewhere for performance and security add-ons. If ease of setup and an all-in-one experience are priorities, Wix is worth a close look.
